Dry Coating Forum – Shaping the future of dry battery electrode processing

The demand for green technologies is increasing immensely. More and more electric vehicles are entering the roads. As a result, the efficient and environmentally friendly production of battery cells is moving to a center stage. Especially during the manufacturing of the battery electrodes, state-of-the-art slurry processes are very space- and energy-consuming and moreover, involve the use of toxic solvents.

Dry battery electrode coating is considered to contribute drastically towards greener and more efficient battery production. Toxic solvents are avoided, the equipment footprint is drastically reduced and energy costs for the intensive drying step are omitted. It is therefore expected that dry battery electrode coating will become the industry standard in the medium term. While there are efforts and developments worldwide that are advancing dry coating, there has not been a forum yet for connecting the different stakeholders in this specific R&D topic.

As one of the leading R&D institutes with many years of dry coating expertise, Fraunhofer IWS now provides a dedicated platform and launches the Dry Coating Forum (DCF). DCF is a forum for material suppliers, equipment manufacturers, cell makers, and end users to exchange information about current trends, developments, and challenges in the field of dry coating technologies.

Call for Abstracts

A presentation of your latest research results or new developments and products in the field of dry battery coating technology with a lecture or poster would be highly welcome. We thus encourage you to submit an abstract.

Please send your abstract using the template provided in the blue box to manja.hanke@iws.fraunhofer.de.

Deadline for abstract submission is May 31, 2023.

Fraunhofer Battery Alliance at the Battery Experts Forum 2022

The Fraunhofer Battery Alliance consists of 24 member institutes working together in the field of battery technologies. The competences of the Fraunhofer Battery Alliance cover the entire value chain - material research, cell production, systems and recycling. These topics are supplemented by simulation and extensive testing and evaluation.

Fraunhofer ICT: For many years, the Fraunhofer ICT has been working on various electrochemical energy storage systems - from materials development and the assembly of laboratory and demonstrator cells to the testing of cells and small battery packs. Further analysis, characterization, various safety tests, abuse tests and thermal investigation on batteries as well as causal investigation in the event of a failure are core topics Fraunhofer ICT.

On July 12^th at 12:0, Fraunhofer ICT will present on " Current aspects of the safety of lithium ion batteries".

Fraunhofer IKTS: Fraunhofer IKTS focuses on different areas of electrochemistry and development of electrochemical energy storage: electrochemical methods, post-lithium systems (e.g. solid-state or Na technologies), manufacturing processes and their digitalisation, cell assemblies as well as a consideration of recycling and life cycle analyses.
Fraunhofer ISE: At Fraunhofer ISE, innovative production processes with novel materials for battery cells are developed and new approaches for battery system technology - from the cell to the module to the complete battery pack, including battery management and thermal management are performed. The TestLab Batteries conducts performance and abuse tests on battery cells, modules, and packs. Furthermore, battery storage projects from the planning to implementation, in particular with strategies for management and quality assurance are managed.
Fraunhofer ISI: The Fraunhofer ISI tracks and analyses local and global battery and application markets. Provided is a broad portfolio of consulting services on battery technology and business strategy.

On July 13^th at 16:15, Fraunhofer ISI will present on "Material costs development of LIB and ASSB".
Fraunhofer LBF: The Fraunhofer LBF develops new methods and tools for the reliable design of electric traction components for electric road vehicles in accelerated development processes. Therefore, the LBF operates a modern test environment for HV energy storage systems that allows multi-physical testing conditions - i.e. combination of mechanical, electrical and thermal loads for accelerated storage validation.
