Today’s battery sector shows a strong consensus that stationary energy storage will play a crucial role in the transition from a fossil fuel-based system to one primarily grounded in renewable energy. As more countries embark on a path to achieving net-zero emissions, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly central to discussions about the energy transition. The expert talk “Stationary Battery Storage: R&D‑Powered Growth for Industry” sheds light on the fundamentals of stationary battery technologies and their embeddedness in modern energy systems.

The event features prominent speakers, including Dr. Dennis Hein, Innovation Scientist at VARTA Storage, and Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Daub, Institute Director at Fraunhofer (IGCV) and Professor of Production Engineering and Energy Storage Systems at TUM. Together they will discuss recent advancements in battery materials and management systems, the role of battery storage in grid stability, and lessons learned from international markets leading in battery storage adoption. Additionally, the Expert Talk will highlight strategies for overcoming obstacles in scaling up these systems and will emphasize the opportunities between research and industrial applications.

By addressing key questions of both, contemporary academic and industry-oriented discourse, this session will provide valuable insights into the future of battery technology. Participants can expect a comprehensive look at emerging trends, challenges, and innovations in stationary battery storage.

Our speakers:

Dr. Dennis Hein studied physics at the University of Würzburg and completed his doctorate in experimental physics at Humboldt University in Berlin in 2021. During his PhD and postdoc at the Helmholtz-Zentrum, he investigated electrochemical catalysts through operando characterization methods. Since 2023, he has been working as an Innovation Scientist at VARTA Storage, where he works along the entire value chain of modern battery systems, from cell characterization and system integration to circular economy. He combines technological expertise with project management and funding administration, focusing on home energy management systems and sustainable energy storage solutions. In addition, he is actively involved as a board member of the Solarverband Bayern e.V.

Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Daub is the Institute Director at the Fraunhofer Institute for Casting, Composite and Processing Technology (IGCV) and the Research Field Leader in the scientific areas of Automation Technology and Energy Storage. He also serves as a Professor of Production Engineering and Energy Storage Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Daub studied Electrical and Information Technology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and earned his doctorate in Laser Material Processing. He gained excellent expertise in the development and prototyping of lithium-ion cells. Additionally, he worked for 9 years at the BMW Group in Munich, where he helped establish the Battery Cell Competence Center. 2017 and 2021, Daub has been honored with the BMW GROUP enGenius Award.
